What is a high bay racking warehouse?

A high-bay racking warehouse is a warehouse with very high racks from a height of 12 m to a current maximum of over 50 m. Because of these structural specifications, high-bay warehouses are made of steel structures. The operating and volume capacities of high-bay warehouses vary from a few hundred pallets to hundreds of thousands of pallets and may be refrigerated or have other specialised automation such as Automatic Storage and Retrieval (ASAR) robotic handling systems to maximise logistical efficiency.

Often, high-bay warehouses are built in the silo construction method, where the steel racks also serve as the load-bearing structure for roof and side wall cladding panels. In other situations, high-bay racks may be installed within existing or new built warehouses.

High-bay warehouses are generally operated with fully automated warehouse management systems which coordinate electronic storage planning, picking and transporting the goods.

The individual high bay storage compartments are arranged in rows with storage and retrieval machines operating on rail systems in the longitudinal direction along the aisles. Stacker cranes lift the palleted goods to the correct height and specified storage location. The storage and retrieval management system stores and retrieves pallets from the specified storage locations and transports them to conveyor technology on which, the goods are transported to the feeding area for loading onto delivery vehicles.
